The Economist has come up with a beguiling expression for Russia and China in its current issue: “best frenemies.” Indeed. The natural gas deal just signed between the two countries is geopolitical to boot. And neither side to the deal is clear from many a hidden intention. Best frenemies, indeed. On some thought, though, the expression goes quite some way to describe many other geopolitical deals that mark today’s world. America and Europe are best frenemies, too. And so are Europe and Russia. As well as America and Russia. Add India and perhaps Brazil to the picture, and there are six geopolitical players that can be best described as frenemies of each other. The fifteen possible frenemiships between the six of them are perforce in constant flux. The expression is thus nothing but ever-so-slightly amusing. Nay, cute. For neither friends nor enemies have any place in geopolitics. Not for long, at least.
