A TRUE HERMIT (April 29, 2014)
As the crow flies, Trieste is almost exactly forty kilometers from Motovun, which translates into sixty-six kilometers by road, but I have not been there ever since I moved from Reading to Motovun for good. That amounts to eleven years already. Rudi Handjal will take me there today, and I feel rather excited about the prospect. Trieste, here I come! So close, and yet so far. And I have family in Trieste, too, but I have lost contact with them since my last move. To wit, I have become a hermit of sorts. Although I go to Zagreb, this is only because of my beloved. I would never go to the Croatian capital if she were living elsewhere. Without her, I would never go anywhere at all. Yes, a true hermit. That is me. Perched on top of the Motovun hill, I am happy to think about the rest of the world without a single move of my limbs.
