A NOSE SO SMALL (June 13, 2014)

As I am sitting on the hotel terrace and sipping my drink, I am watching a fat German man of about sixty who keeps adjusting his glasses all the time as he sits with several of his friends. Judging by their accent, they are from Bavaria. The glasses seem to be falling off the man’s nose every now and then. It takes me a while to figure out that his red nose is way too small to support a pair of glasses. Which is why it is so red, too. For it takes a continuous effort to keep the glasses in place. In short, the nose is irritated from the continuous rubbing. In addition, his glasses are on the bulky side. Strong prescriptions, I reckon. By and by, I start feeling sorry for the man. So much so that I consider getting up from my table, walking over to him, introducing myself in a friendly way, and suggesting a pair of contact lenses in place of his bulky glasses. “Simply put,” I imagine myself saying to him by way of an explanation, “your nose is too small for glasses!” Luckily, he and his company pay their bill, get up from their table, and leave the hotel terrace before my friendly intervention. Phew! With a nose so small, he must attract much untoward sympathy everywhere he goes.
