“WHY IS BRITAIN RUNNING AWAY FROM EUROPE?” (March 4, 2014)

Thus Will Straw, a Labor Party youngster, for Der Spiegel today. “Great Britain used to play a key role in leading Europe, and the benefits have been substantial,” he argues in the byline. “But now, the UK is turning its back on the EU and has chosen to focus on peripheral issues. It is the wrong move.” He starts by reminding the reader that it was Winston Churchill who called for the creation of a United States of Europe in the aftermath of World War II. He proceeds by arguing that Britain has been slow to become part of the European Union and that it has become a nuisance in obstructing the Union’s development. Interestingly, he has nothing to say about the proposed British referendum to leave the Union. And he concludes by listing reforms Britain should initiate within the Union. For example, he proposes the appointment of a new growth commissioner within the European Commission. By the end of the article, one feels that Straw could feel at home among the Eurocrats in Brussels. Disappointingly, he never returns to Churchill’s original idea. But the United States of Europe is the only idea that can still save the Union from gradual disintegration, which is already well on its way. It would be far from easy to bring it to life, but it would be worth the effort. The Union as it has come to pass is not even a club, let alone a union of any sort. In fact, it is but a mirage, which is exactly why Britain is running away from it. Pace Straw, but there are Eurocrats too many already.
