“VAGINA SELFIE FOR 3D PRINTERS LANDS JAPANESE ARTIST IN TROUBLE” (July 15, 2014)
Thus The Guardian today. “Megumi Igarashi, aka Rokudenashiko, arrested for e-mailing digital template of her genitals to supporters of her art,” elaborates the newspaper. The pseudonym of the forty-two-year-old artist can be translated as “good-for-nothing girl.” She recently made a kayak inspired on her own genitalia, which she calls “pussy boat.” Now she is held in Tokyo on suspicion of breaking Japanese obscenity laws. She denies the charges. She neither recognizes the scanned 3D data as obscene nor has she distributed them for money, she explains. Igarashi has made her name with her “decorated vaginas” series. In one of her recent works, which she describes as “a vaginal battle scene,” a group of toy soldiers are taking cover in a pudic crevice. In another, workers in the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant are shown in similar surroundings. The titles of her works incorporate the word manko for vagina in Japanese. She says she is on a mission to “demystify” female genitals. All in all, one can only hope that the Japanese artist will manage to wriggle out of her arrest. If anything else, her work symbolizes the end of art pretty well. Congratulations!
