“THE WORKING CLASSES DESERVE RESPECT” (October 18, 2014)

Thus the Financial Times today. “Rights for gay people, women, and other groups are on the ascendant but the working class gets dismissed as an embarrassing relic,” elaborates the newspaper. Cute, this. Minus the confusing overlap of the plural and singular in the title and byline, the attempt is almost endearing. Chances are it will fall on deaf ears, though. And rightly so. The working class had its chance the last century, but it blew it. And how. As for gays and women, they will blow their chances soon enough, as well. Embarrassing relics will keep piling up. The way capitalism is going, only robots will thrive both in the factory and the office. Any day soon, they will replace the police and the army. The few bosses that manage to survive the slaughter will be the only ones who deserve respect. And all of it. But they will keep out of sight for fear of retaliation by all and sundry. The very notion of the working class, or perhaps classes, will be relegated to ancient history. Assuming the subject is still taught in school by then, it goes without saying.
