“THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE OF NEO-NAZIS AND FOOTBALL HOOLIGANS” (November 5, 2014)

Thus Der Spiegel today. “The riots in Cologne at the end of October show there is a new danger on Germany’s extremist right,” elaborates the newspaper. “Neo-Nazis and football hooligans have teamed up to go after Islamist Salafists. Many are wondering why officials didn’t recognize the development sooner.” The article comes together with a bunch of photographs of the riots. They all show men in their late teens and early twenties. But the article goes on and on about the unholy alliance, which has surprised everyone. Apparently, the only thing that unites them is hatred against foreigners, and foreigners of choice are Muslims. The gender and the age of rioters are left out, though. And it is precisely the men in their late teens and early twenties that have formed the core of all armies for the last five millennia or so. In former times, they defended their tribes against men their age. Kings and queens used them in their armies. But they are unemployed now that armies have disappeared from Germany and much of Europe. What else can they do but riot? And whom else to riot against but foreigners? Young men are left to themselves in Germany and elsewhere across the subcontinent. But it is their elders who are guilty of their neglect, as well as lack of understanding. Humans have hardly changed over the last hundred-thousand years, and it is high time to understand some of the most obvious consequences of that simple fact.
