“THE ONE FILM TO WATCH THIS WEEK” (November 28, 2014)
Thus The Guardian today. “Peter Bradshaw recommends ‘Stations of the Cross,’ about a girl convinced of her own sacrificial destiny,” elaborates the newspaper. Who the hell is Peter Bradshaw? At any rate, I clicked what I thought was an article, but it turned out to be a video. Yuck. Concerning the movie, it is by a certain Dietrich Brügemann. The German film, entitled ‘Kreuzweg’ in the original, won the Silver Bear for best script at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Maria, the girl in the story, is fourteen. Her family is part of a fundamentalist Catholic community. She lives her everyday life in the modern world, yet her heart belongs to Jesus. She wants to follow him… Wow! Although Christian fundamentalism strikes me as a worthy subject at this day and age, I immediately decided not to watch the movie. Or any other movie, for that matter. Besides, it is Christian fundamentalism in the States that I find truly interesting, at least geopolitically. The complement of Muslim fundamentalism, it is a potent mix of ideas and emotions that are likely to shape much of the strife in this century. George Bush and Tony Blair started it rolling so many years ago. As for a German version of it, it is not likely to reach beyond girls in their puberty.
