The trust has an endowment of more than twenty-billion for the purpose. Future epidemics are inevitable, he says. It is impossible to eradicate an infectious disease, but eradication is only possible with a vaccine. Diseases mutate and this requires new vaccines all the time. The trouble is that many people now live in very close proximity to each other and to animals, which makes it easy for diseases to spread. Many diseases are thus brewing in Asia and Africa. And so forth. Climate change is not even mentioned in the interview, but it is not difficult to figure out that it can only contribute to the spread of dangerous diseases while curbing the development of new vaccines. Soon enough, migrants will be seen as carriers of new diseases. Immigration will be fought tooth and nail with one more argument at hand, and a powerful one at that. And who would even think of spending a dime for the development of vaccines to save the hapless immigrants from whatever ails them?
