Croatia is long out of the world soccer tournament in Brazil, but Croats are still watching the spectacle with emotion. Special feelings are in the air, I can tell from afar. What is going on? Nationalism can cross national borders, it appears. In the game between Germany and France, the favorite was perfectly clear. France is Serbian since World War I, and Germany is “ours” since World War II at least. Besides, it helped Croatia in its quest for independence a couple of decades ago. When Germany won, everyone was thus happy. Now that Germany and Brazil are sure to go to the semifinals, “our” Germany is a definite favorite in the Croatian capital. When it comes to Belgium and Argentina, the emotions are mixed. Just like Germans, many Croats had escaped to Argentina after World War II, but Belgium is a European country. As far as the Netherlands and Costa Rica are concerned, the European country is a definite favorite. Nationalism knows no borders, indeed.
