“ON NOT WRITING” (August 26, 2014)

Thus The New York Times today. “Just as the body needs time to rest, so too does an essay, or a book,” elaborates the newspaper. Realizing that this bit of wisdom must be coming from a writer, I skipped the article. Writers have been writing about rest from writing every since they showed up on the stage of history. I am not a writer, though. Perish the thought. Thus I am writing neither an essay nor a book. I am just writing. Aimlessly, too. Which is why I do not need any rest from writing. But I pity the writers one and all, including the author of the article in question. Writing an essay or a book for fortune and fame, as well as the proverbial fucks, is a pitiful business, indeed. And a waste of precious time. The best I can offer him or her by way of advice is to make that rest stretch. And stretch. With some luck, it will stretch forever. There are so many ways to make a living without much pain, anyway.
