“NATO OFFICIAL WARNS ON RUSSIAN FORCES” (April 3, 2014)
Thus The Wall Street Journal today. “The top military commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said that Russian forces could take large swaths of Ukraine in three to five days,” explains the newspaper. Wow! We had no idea it was that bad! Luckily, the top NATO enchilada is here to give us his professional opinion. I can well imagine Putin and his generals laughing at the news. “Three to five days?” he would chuckle. “How about one to two days?” Be that as it may, NATO is not prepared to do a thing about the situation in Ukraine. The best it can offer is professional opinion of this ilk. The only question is what NATO would be prepared to do if Putin and his generals decided to try their luck a bit closer to the border of the European Union. Would its military commanders offer anything but professional opinion? Now that Barack Obama is a Nobel laureate for peace, of all things, this may be the best Europe can hope for.
