“JOHNSON QUESTIONS BRITAIN’S EU MEMBERSHIP” (August 5, 2014)

Thus the Financial Times today. “London mayor aligns with eurosceptics as he considers options,” elaborates the newspaper. The accompanying picture shows Boris Johnson and David Cameron, the British prime minister, laughing their heads off. To my surprise, I join them at once. The European Union is turning into a joke, no doubt whatsoever. But I am also laughing at myself, for I moved from the States to Europe in 1990 is expectation of something entirely different. As soon as the Berlin wall came down, I saw a glorious future for Europe. How silly I was! And how disappointed I am twenty-five years later. Alas, laughter is my last refuge! Returning to Johnson and Cameron, their laughter must have a wholly different origin. Both of them are an entire generation younger than me. Their delusions are still unfathomable to them both.
