“IN TWIST, ANOTHER EX-COMMANDO SAYS HE SHOT BIN LADEN” (November 7, 2014)

Thus The New York Times today. “Robert O’Neill, a former member of the Navy SEALs, claims to have shot the Al Qaeda leader during a daring operation in Pakistan in 2011,” elaborates the newspaper. By the way, the acronym stands for the three environments in which the commandos operate—sea, air, and land. O’Neill was part of SEAL Team 6. Not surprisingly, some SEALs have expressed surprise that O’Neill would publicize his part in the raid, given the possibility of reprisals by militants aligned with Al Qaeda or interested in a symbolic attack. But the former SEAL Team 6 commander, who declined to be identified because of the classified nature of the work, said Mr. O’Neill had not played a “singular role” in the mission. “O’Neill’s specific role on any of these missions is irrelevant because everything we do is as a team,” he added, “and we protect the team—its past, present and future.” Well put. As for O’Neill, he surely deserves a special prize for stupidity. Say, a Nobel for the art. Human stupidity is unlimited, but his achievement is still singular. As for the Navy SEALs, they should do their best to avoid the likes of him in any future operation. The team must always come first.
