Thus The New York Times today. “Millions of Americans are receiving auto loans they cannot afford, in a lending climate marked by some of the same lack of caution seen in the housing industry before its 2008 implosion,” explains the newspaper. Amazing but true. Humans have been considered bright enough not to repeat the housing bubble, either in America or elsewhere, but they are clearly not bright enough to avoid other bubbles of the same kind. Human stupidity apart, there is something else behind this sad story: the voraciousness of capitalism as it has come to pass. And credit is its last trick. In many parts of the world, it is its only trick, as well. The house of cards is getting ever taller, and ever more amazing to behold as it reaches for the sky. The proverbial butterfly flapping its wings anywhere around the world will be enough to bring it down…
