“HUMANS ARE TOO STUPID TO PREVENT CLIMATE CHANGE” (November 16, 2014)
Thus James Lovelock in an interview for The Guardian on March 29, 2010. Wonderful! When I came across these words on the World Wide Web, at first I thought they were my own. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that they were Lovelock’s. We think alike, no doubt whatsoever. “I don’t think we’re yet evolved to the point where we’re clever enough to handle as complex a situation as climate change,” he said in an interview for the newspaper. “The inertia of humans is so huge that you can’t really do anything meaningful.” Another important obstruction to meaningful action is modern democracy, he added. “Even the best democracies agree that when a major war approaches, democracy must be put on hold for the time being. I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while.” A good point, but an entirely unnecessary one. Even with democracy on hold, humans are too stupid to prevent climate change. Quantum sufficit. Pace Lovelock, but it is best to avoid interviews altogether.
