“EU MIGRANTS CONTRIBUTE TWENTY BILLION POUNDS TO BRITAIN” (November 5, 2014)
Thus the Financial Times today. “Taxes paid heavily outweigh state benefits received,” explains the newspaper. Of course. But the point is worth repeating over and over again. Arguments against migrants are heavily biased for all sorts of reasons, most of them racial, and only the simplest retorts, such as this one, have a chance in the political turmoil surrounding immigration. This holds for every European country besieged by migrants, it goes without saying. Well, this holds for America, as well. Compare income and outgo, and shut up. By and large, migrants are good for the economy. And there will be plenty of them in the years to come. What with economic doldrums and climate change, their numbers will be swelling. It can only be hoped that financial newspapers such as this one will keep reminding the disgruntled of the economics in question.
