“CHINA’S SOLDIERS TOO BIG FOR TANKS” (February 19, 2014)
Thus the Financial Times today. “Troops taller and heavier than they were twenty years ago,” elaborates the newspaper. Delightful! And especially for the Chinese males, of course. It is amazing how quickly better food, hygiene, and medicine translates into size. When I was a kid, Americans struck most Europeans as bigger and heavier, but Europeans caught up with them in a single generation. Two generations later, the Asians are catching up, as well. In short, new tanks will be needed, and old tanks will need to be refurbished. The best advice to the Chinese military is to go for the American body size from the start. Why waste money for refurbishment over and over again?
