“BRITAIN MUST CHOOSE NOW IF IT WILL STAY IN EUROPE” (June 3, 2014)

Thus Der Spiegel today. “For years Britain has blackmailed and made fool out of the EU,” elaborates the newspaper. “The United Kingdom must finally make a choice: It can play by the rules or can leave the European Union.” By the way, this is an editorial, no less. Although the referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership is supposed to take place in three years, this is a call for the vaunted Union to kick it out ahead of time. Either you are with us, or you are out! In short, the last parliamentary elections in the Union seem to have been democratic enough. Emotions are high, that is. Who could wait for another three years for one of the leading European countries to decide which way to go? Thus the idea of punitive action now. And the call comes from Germany, the very core of today’s Europe. Any day soon, a similar call could be facing France, Germany’s closest ally for years. One way or another, the last parliamentary elections have opened many an eye, all of which shine brightly at the moment. Slowly but surely, Europe is heading backwards. The territory is marked pretty well by so many wars of the past. The roads, the dates, the battlefields…
