Recently, three buildings converted to house refugees have been set on fire and painted with swastikas. According to the federal government, there were eighty-six such attacks since the beginning of the year as various movements are coming together. German officials are alarmed as the number of immigrants increases all the time. “A vague feeling of being threatened unites the demonstrators, whether they see themselves as members of the middle-class, conservative nationalists or radical right-wingers,” argues the newspaper. “They yearn for isolation and simple answers, which is why almost-forgotten, Nazi-era terms like Volk (the people) and Vaterland (the fatherland) are back in vogue.” At the same time, there is an ever-larger number of people in Germany who worry about these developments. Demonstrations are planned against the isolationists. Slowly but surely, the country is being divided. But Muslims play hardly any rôle in the tumult, which the newspaper misses entirely. It is those who are against Muslims versus those who are against them rather than for the Muslims. As is the case across the European Union, the Muslims are only an excuse for the strife. In fact, they are lost in the middle, just like the Jews less than a century ago.
