TOO MANY BEYS (February 27, 2009)
Sitting at Klaudio’s over evening drinks, a bunch of us are discussing the causes of the economic crisis that is stalking the entire world. The common sentiment at our table is that people everywhere got too rich for their own good. At some point Jozo Brandić comes up with an apt Bosnian proverb: “Me bey, you bey, but who will mind the horse?” Beys used to be high-ranking officials in the Ottoman Empire, which stretched all the way to Bosnia until a bit more than a century ago. Too many beys, that is.
