THROUGH THE CANOPY (February 20, 2009)
Tlön was fond of primates. Wherever he discovered them in a tropical forest, he would spend days alone in their company. His mates sometimes wondered about this curious habit of his, but he would rarely discuss it with them. On occasion they would spot him following a troupe of primates through the canopy, and they marveled at his unusual skill. Although his arms and legs were so different in length than those of his nimble teachers, he learned their tricks quickly. The palms of his hands would get callous after only a few days, and he would move from branch to branch with surprising speed. “What potential,” he said to one of his mates as he lowered himself to the ground next to where he was standing, “but so utterly wasted!” “What do you mean?” his mate was puzzled. “Ah,” Tlön waved his hand, “I hope they will get another chance in the future.” And that was all his puzzled mate could get out of him on their way out of the forest.
