THE WORLD CUP IN INSECURITY (September 10, 2009)
Before last night’s soccer game with England, the Croatian team was hailed by the Croatian media as one of the best in the world. They were winners. Vanquishers. Conquerors. Subjugators. The victory over England a few years ago was not a stroke of good luck, but a well-deserved achievement that comes with inborn talent and much hard work. With some effort, our boys could get there once again. And how. This morning’s reports are rather different. The defeat, dispiriting as it already is, has been turned into no less than a national disaster. Our boys were not only badly beaten, but also shown to be dreadful losers. Runts. Creeps. Sissies. Stripped naked, they were whipped on the battlefield. From one extravagant exaggeration to another, the media only display the entrenched insecurity of the entire nation. And when it comes to insecurity of this pitiful ilk, Croatians surely win the World Cup. Hands down.
