THE TROUBLE WITH FLOWERS (July 9, 2009)

Both my beloved and I love to have flowers around.  We cannot easily buy them in Motovun, though.  When we arrive in Zagreb on one of my visits, we immediately buy a large bunch in one of the flower shops not far from her place.  We used to be partial to tulips for a while, but we are into lilies as of late.  It is a joy to watch their luscious bulbs open one after another for about a week.  But the trouble with flowers is that my visits are both too long and too short for them.  Just like today, our second bunch is still in perfect shape on the day when we depart from Zagreb on my return to Motovun, where my beloved will remain for several days.  The flowers will have wilted by the time she returns to Zagreb.  Thus we both feel some pain when we have to toss them into the garbage bin on our way out of the house.  I am writing about our predicament in the vague hope that it will make it a bit less painful a few hours from now.  As I write, the lilies bask in their glory right in front of me.  Luckily for me, they seem to be completely oblivious to their ignoble end.
