THE SCHOOL OF WHOREDOM (September 19, 2009)

Thus the title of the one and only book I managed to buy in Zagreb on the very last day of my last visit.[1] Pietro Aretino, one of my all-time favorites among intellectuals. Sixteenth century. A mother, an esteemed whore with much worldly experience, and her adolescent daughter, an impatient whore to become, are unabashedly talking about the oldest trade on the planet. Much gory detail, too. A spoof on a Platonist dialogue fashionable at the time, no less. Splendid. Magnificent. But the book will forever remain tied in my mind to the Croatian capital. The school of whoredom in a nutshell.
