THE LUCKY ONES (December 6, 2009)

Newcomers all, people in Motovun are not very fond of newcomers. The newer newcomers, that is. “Ah,” they like to say about some of those who sold their houses during the real estate boom, “they got them for nothing!” To begin with, they forget that money was worth much more so many decades ago. In today’s terms, of course. Besides, they forget that much money was spent to pull those houses out of ruin. In fact, the whole town would have been a ruin if prices were even slightly higher back then. But they will never learn. Now that the real estate boom is just a fond memory, they can cherish their warped recollections to their hearts’ content. “I could’ve sold my house for a fortune,” they will sigh over and over again, “but I’m so attached to this place that I simply couldn’t.” The next real estate boom is so far away that they can safely enjoy Motovun till their last day.  Most of he newcomers are rather long in the tooth, anyhow. The lucky ones.
