THE BADGE (March 18, 2009)
I have never designed a badge or had one made for me. The badge for the local elections in Motovun is my first. Made in a Zagreb shop specializing in signage of all sorts, it is exceedingly simple: the background is bright green and it has “Motovun” written on it in white lettering. Helvetica. Capital letters only. The name of the town can be discerned from afar. “Green Motovun,” the badge declares brightly. But it is quite an experience to see two-hundred badges in a pile. I just picked them up from the shop, and I am marveling at the sight. Of course, it will be even more exciting to see them on many a chest. Next week I will participate in a green conference in the Croatian capital, and I will make sure that the badge gets noticed. Photographed. And captured by television cameras. Green Motovun! And green it still is, but it is impossible to say for how much longer. Our poor town is so very green that it is attracting concrete like a magnet.
