THE ART OF LIVING IN THE STICKS (July 18, 2009)
It was getting hotter and hotter for at least a week. Two days ago a turn in the weather was finally forecast. Temperatures were to drop considerably after a bout of rain, which was most likely to arrive with a big storm. The forecast became more precise during the day yesterday. The welcome turn was to come early this morning. And so it did. The storm hit Motovun just after six in the morning. Thunders came closer and closer. They were ever louder. Some were truly ferocious. The uninterruptible power supply system in my study beeped a few times at random, and then it started beeping continuously. The power was completely cut. I tried to fall asleep again, but the beeping made it kind of hard. I did manage to doze off on several occasions, but never for long. Beep, beep, beep… It was past ten o’clock when I got up. Disgruntled with the power company, I struggled with my morning chores. The idiots knew about the storm well in advance! The forecast was precise enough! How come they were not prepared for it! What could have detained the idiots from fixing the line after four full hours?! After a while, I remembered that I should check the electric box in the entrance hall. When I opened it, it was clear at once that the main switch was down. A thunder must have struck so close to the house that it tripped the switch. The same thing happened a couple of weeks ago, while there was no-one in the house. And it was all in my own hands for so many hours… Gosh, when will I finally master the art of living in the sticks?!
