TABLES GALORE (December 1, 2009)
It was so warm yesterday evening that central Zagreb was as crowded as it usually is in late summer, when everyone is back from vacations and eager to display that fabulous tan. It was hard to find a table in the most fashionable outdoors cafés. People seem to be spending a bit less money, though. Bottled water is becoming an ever more popular drink. But the merry scene started me thinking. How much longer will the Croatian capital look as though the global economic crisis is pure fiction? Now that the tourist season is over, and that the next one will start around Easter, the main source of income for most Croatians has dried up. Either directly or indirectly, tourism feeds more people than any other economic activity. Given that the last season was not as good as several previous ones, there is less stashed away for a rainy day. So, I guess the crisis will hit a month or maybe two before the next tourist season, which may well turn out to be even worse than the last one. And there will be tables galore in fashionable cafés in central Zagreb no matter how warm it gets.
