ON MY HANDS (November 21, 2009)

Why am I reading about the end of the Roman Empire so doggedly? The answer is so obvious, it deserves almost no thought. Well, I have too much time on my hands!

When this haiku was penned, my fight against crooked golf and polo in Motovun was often criticized in this way. And by good friends, too. Back then, many people around me felt that I had too much time on my hands. Otherwise, I would not poke my nose into affairs that had nothing whatsoever to do with my own concerns. Reading about the end of the Roman Empire would strike them as another endeavor of the same ilk. Sheer waste if time, that is. Most of them would be stunned to learn that the subject was about their own flesh and bones, as well. Which explains the plethora of books on the same subject that have appeared in print the last decade or two. The end of the Roman Empire is getting closer and closer for the second time…
