NO ALTERNATIVE (January 5, 2009)

How come capitalism has no alternative two decades after socialism ceased to be one? Is it because capitalism indeed has no alternative? Or because the only alternative left after the ravages of capitalism, including rampant global warming, is a relapse to feudalism? Or perhaps even slavery?

Addendum (May 21, 2016)

When the going gets tough, tyrants are in demand. The tougher it gets, the more fervent the demand becomes. And climate change will be as tough as tough ever gets. Vladimir Putin is an early star of the world to come. Who knows, Donald Trump may soon join him as a tyrant of renown. Soon enough, the likes of Putin and Trump will become impregnable. They will rule the roost as long as they can, and then they will pass the scepter to one of their kin. In the meanwhile, they will entrust huge chunks of land to their most trusted associates. The fiefs will be passed down to their kin, as well. New titles will come along with ease. Kings, dukes, and barons are history by now, but they will reappear under new guises. By and by, the new feudal order will establish itself, and titles will be inherited down the line. The chunks of land associated with those titles will get smaller and smaller, but the guiding principle will remain throughout: power and land go together, and with them come influence and affluence. The same holds for obligations, as well, for feudalism is unimaginable without untold armies. Climate change will drive millions from their land, and wars for land will become a way of life once again. In four to six generations, the new order will become entrenched across the world. And capitalism as we know it will be nigh forgotten.
