MY NEW WORLD (October 18, 2009)

Years ago I bought a map of my new world, as I used to call it back then (“Friuli – Venezia Giulia,” January 11, 2003). Jof di Montasio, where I almost lost my life a couple of years earlier, is right there, as well. The second-highest peak in the Julian Alps, it cannot be missed, either. Once again, I love to spread the map on the floor and stare at it for a long, long time, as though I could somehow soak it in once and for all. But this time my fascination is somewhat different. Actually, its focus is surely elsewhere. I am not contemplating the Istrian peninsula surrounding Motovun, where my house was under refurbishment more than six years ago. Instead, I am contemplating the world closer to the faithful peak, where I may move in a year or two. This time around, Udine is the center of my new world. Or maybe it is Cividale in the foothills of the Alps. God only knows what will happen next, but I am certainly looking for a new home. If I get lucky on this occasion, it will be my last, too. But the name of the region will be just right, reminding me ever anew of my ancestors, at least on my paternal side. Going back a thousand years at least, the memory is hard to resist. Yes, my new world is within easy reach of my beloved Venice.
