JUST ANOTHER COMMON NAME (May 13, 2009)
Before I came to Motovun, my family name was nearly only my own. I would bump into it only when meeting a relative, usually a very close one. I was so far from my roots that I got used to it. Bons were few and far between, and that was simply that. But things have changed in my elective hometown. Here is an example. On one of the three lists competing in the upcoming local elections there is a certain Danijel Bon. He happens to be the fourth among the Independents, just as I am the fourth among the Social Democrats in coalition with the Greens. I once briefly met his father, Aldo, who is roughly my own age, but I do not know Danijel personally. He must be in his thirties, just like my first son, Marko. Chances are we are distant relatives, hailing from the island of Cres, but this does not matter at this juncture. Not at all. Bon is just another name in these parts. Just another common name, at long last.
