HORSES WITH COLTS (June 28, 2009)

On the highway from Rijeka to Zagreb, the traffic slowed down considerably just past Karlovac. Both lanes came to a complete stop every now and then for about twenty kilometers. We could not understand why. The weather was nice enough this afternoon. Besides, there were no signs of an accident. When we turned on the radio, the first explanation was that people were slowing down for no reason whatsoever. “Step on it!” the announcer urged with exaggerated gusto. The explanation emerged a few minutes later, though. “Many horses with colts are grazing next to the road,” the announcer chirped happily, “and people are slowing down to see the spectacle.” The plea to step on it was considerably milder this time around.
