DOMINOES (October 21, 2009)

My beloved and I engage in all sorts of cooperative games, but there is one game we love that is competitive to boot: dominoes. So far, she is in the lead, but I have been insisting that this is due to her good luck, which cannot last forever. For this she mocks me no end. Thus I keep a spreadsheet with our results, and I meticulously update it every once in a while. Last time we were together in Zagreb, we played a hundred-twenty games, and I acquitted myself well. She was ahead by only a couple of games. Today I found in my knapsack the record of our last domino contest, which I kept on a piece of paper, and I immediately updated the spreadsheet on my computer. As it turns out, she is ahead of me by eighty-five games out of the total of a thousand-forty. Although her lead has dropped a little in percentage terms, it has not changed in my favor by much. “It will take us a long time to reach equality,” I just sent her a conciliatory mobile-phone text-message. “Yup,” she responded at once, “a looong time!” The competitive spirit is with us, all right.
