DEAR ENEMIES (November 21, 2009)

A sweetheart that I am, I would like to share some good news with my enemies in Motovun and farther afield in Istria and Croatia as a whole. Yesterday I talked with a real estate agent about selling my house and moving abroad. He saw the property already, but today we discussed the price and the timing in a bit more detail. I am far from committed to selling it yet, but I am considering it seriously enough. Talking to a real estate agent does make everything a bit more “real” than hitherto. It always does, as I have learned from many an experience of this kind. A sweetheart that I am, I could not keep such good news from my enemies. Or from wishing them many a success like the one they have had with me. So far, at least. Let them enjoy Motovun all by themselves!

Addendum (November 9, 2016)

So many years later, I cannot but feel a bit sorry for my enemies in Motovun. Alas, they cannot enjoy it all by themselves! I was thinking about Cividale del Friuli close to Udine in Italy as my new home, but one visit to the town together with my beloved was sufficient to change my mind. Not a single house in the Italian town could match my house in Istria, let alone the houses that were actually on offer at the time. Returning to my enemies, I really felt kind of apologetic when I eventually decided not to move. A sweetheart that I am, I can still feel their sour disappointment. But I must add that my enemies must be quite relieved that many other newcomers have gradually left Motovun. It is nigh deserted by now, as witnessed by many “for sale” signs. And this is a palpable success on my enemies’ part. Congratulations all around!
