Thus an anonymous German or Austrian journalist at the mass assembly of the leading Croatian party this weekend, as reported by a Croatian newspaper this morning. A few days after the prime minister and party leader resigned to everyone’s consternation, his replacement was agreed by the throng without a single counter-candidate or dissenting voice. So much for Communism, too. It has gone down in the historical record as nothing but a travesty of the hope it represented about a century ago. Even the word “community” is suspect by now. Come to think of it, the leading party in this godforsaken land is known as the Croatian Democratic Union, where “union” is just another name for “community.”
