CROATIAN TO BOOT (August 1, 2009)

A big wedding is taking place on Ilovik. The bride is originally from this island, while the groom hails from another island further south. His party thus arrived by ferry, and a long procession paraded through town on the way to her house. A short while later, an even longer procession paraded to the church, where the priest was waiting. On both occasions, a fat man in his fifties proudly carried a huge Croatian flag in front of all the others. His head raised high, he waved it from side to side of narrow streets. The bride and the groom are actually from the States, and their Croatian is rather rudimentary. Even their parents have trouble with the tongue of their ancestors. Be that as it may, they are Croatian to boot. And the flag is their solemn witness.
