CAUGHT BY THE DAWN (January 4, 2009)
A bunch of us are sipping our drinks at Klaudio’s and talking about the end of our civilization. At some point we start talking about the remnants of the great works that will be discovered under the rubble many years from now. “When I was a kid,” Ivan Hrvatin jumps in, “the arena in Pula was a great mystery to many of us.” His parents and the parents of his friends knew a bit about the Romans and their building skills, but they were not sure about what they knew. “The fairies built it,” the kids were told half in jest. “But where is the roof?” The parents were ready, too: “The fairies were caught by the dawn.” We all laugh. “Of course,” Ivan repeats, “our parents knew a bit about the Romans.”
