Less than a fortnight after its release in the United States, I saw Watchmen in Zagreb. It was the first day here, and there were about a hundred people in the theater. I waited rather eagerly for this movie ever since I read about it in the online edition of New York Times five months ago (“Watchmen, the Movie,” October 19, 2008). Back then, I was sure it would be a splash, just like the cartoon, which I followed quite avidly in the 1980s. All the cinematic tricks notwithstanding, and some were pretty wonderful to watch, the movie is a disappointment. The cartoon beats it by a wide margin. All things considered, the movie should never have been made, either.
