AT HOME (August 8, 2009)

Whenever a large group of Italians comes to Motovun, most of them soon start behaving as though they are at home. Twenty or thirty of them who stay in town for a week or longer end up by behaving as though it is the home of their ancestors, as well. Of course, they apparently have every right to behave this way, for this in fact was their ancestors’ home. Besides, many of them come from places in Italy not unlike Motovun. On top of everything, they are among the most rambunctious people in all of Europe, which can be rather endearing at times. And yet, I must admit that I am ever so slightly annoyed whenever a large group of Italians barges into town, and especially if they stay for more than a day or two. For crying out loud, this is not their home any longer!
