A SOFT SPOT FOR MOTOVUN (March 5, 2009)

A few days ago I received a wonderful electronic-mail message via the feedback function built into my Residua website. It came from a woman who now lives in Australia but who hails from Motovun. In my writings I mentioned her grandmother a few times, including her funeral some years back, and she felt like sending me a few words. Her family emigrated in the early Seventies, when she was only seven. In the mid-Nineties she had spent three months with her grandmother in Motovun. “This was one of the happiest times of my life,” she writes, “getting to know an incredibly strong and resilient woman.” Her parents visit the town every few years to catch up with their family and friends. “I will always have a soft spot for Motovun and think of it as home,” she writes. She plans to return this year or next together with her husband. “But it will not be the same without my grandmother,” she concludes, “whom I will always remember as a woman I loved, respected, and admired for her strength and courage.” I immediately responded with a few nice words about her grandmother, whom I still remember most fondly. And I asked her to let me know when she and her husband planned to visit Motovun, so that we could meet in person. But I am still over the moon because my writings have touched the heart of someone who hails from the center of the world. Such people are few and far between, indeed.
