TWO (January 8, 2008)

“Hello, kids!” I yell as the children from the daycare center down Borgo file past my house. They are all eyes. “What do you say?” intones one of their two teachers. “Hello!” yell the kids in one voice and start giggling. “How many do you have now?” I ask the teacher as she walks past my doorway. “Eighteen,” she says, “but some of them are still on winter vacations.” “And how many of them are from Motovun?” “Two,” she whispers almost apologetically and points at Josip Handjal and Aleks Basaneze. “Two?” I gasp. Looking down, she nods and waves me goodbye.
