TRIMMER-HAPPY (May 7, 2008)

While I was in Zagreb, I bought a trimmer with a rechargeable battery in an enormous hardware store. Since I returned to Motovun, I have used it a great deal. When the battery is full, I return to the grasses and weeds in my garden with a vengeance. To tell the truth, I am getting trimmer-happy. But the grasses and weeds never cease to amaze me. While I was in Zagreb, they grew so tall and so sturdy that my battery does not last more than fifteen minutes. It is supposed to last forty-five minutes, but the job in my garden is much harder than on an average lawn. Three times harder, as it seems. Returning to the grasses and weeds, they are like life itself. Oblivious to my puny trimmer, they just grow and grow. They are relentless. And they are stubborn. Come to think of it, it is high time to return to my garden. The battery must be full once again.
