THE RUSSIANS (June 22, 2008)
Of all the tourists who press through Motovun’s tight streets and teeny squares, the Russians are the most surprising. At least to me, I must add. The Germans, the Italians, the British, or the Americans I kind of know already, but the Russians are still a mystery to me. Some of them are rather boorish, but some are quite different: urbane, polished, even sophisticated, and yet straight, easy-going, and self-confident. The sort of people capable of surprising those who believe they know the world. Well, the sort of people very like me, I must add again.
