THE MOTOVUN CINEMA (November 2, 2008)
Ever since I moved to Motovun in July 2003, I saw only one movie in the Motovun cinema, known as Kino Bauer. Actually, I went to see the moviegoers, but, to my great disappointment, there were only a few of them. That was in December the same year I came to the town. To the best of my knowledge, no other movie has been shown in the cinema since then, for it does not appear to be commercially viable. Thus I am rather excited about the movie I will see there tonight. Once again, I am much more eager to see the moviegoers than the movie itself. This time around, the event was organized by Horst Schneider with the help of Milan Stojaković and Eni Nurkollari, all of whom live in town. I helped by inviting everyone from my electronic-mail party list. If everything goes as expected, tonight we will have a whole bunch of good friends in one place. The Motovun cinema as it was meant to be.
Addendum (November 3, 2008)
The evening was a smashing success. Of about a hundred seats in the cinema, some forty were taken. Afterwards, we had a glass of wine, either red or white, and we all chatted about the movie. It was a good one, too. By way of proof, I cried at least thrice. But it is clear that a new tradition is upon us. Lars von Trier’s “Dogville” (2003) is already whispered about as the next movie in the series. One way or another, Horst has lit upon something of real value to us all. One day soon, the Motovun cinema will be bursting full once again.
