THE MARCH NOWHERE (November 29, 2008)
Today I learned from a friend that vrach in Russian means “doctor.” When I checked my Russian-English dictionary, that was indeed the case. The Russian word has no other meaning, either. This is of interest because in Croatian or Serbian the same word means “conjurer,” “sorcerer,” or “fortune-teller.” That is, “shaman.” I checked my Serbo-Croatian-English dictionary, and that was indeed the case. Derived from Old Slavonic just as Russian, but farther along from the root of all Slavic languages, Croatian and Serbian only show the march of generations. The march nowhere, absolutely nowhere.
