SHOCKED BY THE ACCIDENT (May 18, 2008)
On her return home, my beloved got into trouble on the road near Buzet, a hilltown some twenty minutes northeast from Motovun. She was not driving fast, but it was drizzling. As she went over a puddle on the road, her car first veered to one side, and then it spun around. She ended up in the gutter on the other side of the road, her car facing backwards. Luckily, there was no-one either in front or behind her. She bounced around in her seat, and she bumped her head against the window a few times, but she was not hurt. The car was fine, as well. As she was telling me about all this a short while later, a question shaped in my mind: “Shall we write about this accident to the authorities in Buzet?” “Nah,” she dismissed my suggestion outright. And she was right, of course. Shocked by the accident, I forgot this was Croatia. After nearly five years in this godforsaken country, I should have known better.
