SHAKESPEARE (July 2, 2008)

As I am sitting on the hotel terrace and sipping my wine in peace, a troupe of young actors is rehearsing a show in the upper square behind me. I have seen them never before, but from their accents they seem to be form Dalmatia. At some point the actors start shouting at the top of their voices, and I hear myself form a quick conclusion: “Shakespeare!” How unjust toward the old playwright, though. As though he invented shouting. As though shouting were not one of the favorite releases among humans. Who knows, the theater might have been invented so as to practice it with complete abandon. As well as impunity. At any rate, it was not Shakespeare at all.
