REAL MOTOVUNERS (January 21, 2008)
There are no more than a handful of people in Motovun who can truthfully say that they hail from Motovun, too. Most of the town’s population either fled or was driven out during or after World War II. A few people hail from one of the neighboring villages, some of which are within sight, but most of them came from other parts of Croatia and beyond. It is therefore ever-so-slightly suspicious whenever someone starts claiming that he or she is a “real” Motovuner. Some gripe is usually lurking behind such a preposterous claim, and it is often petty. In any case, I have heard through the grapevine that a bunch of young men in their late teens or early twenties, all of whom have been born here, has taken to billing themselves as real Motovuners. As such, they engage in the same few pastimes and frequent the same few places. The only gripe I can imagine in this case is that the whole world is passing them by.
